On September 26, 2007, a new book “Leeuw en Draak: Vier eeuwen Nederland en Vietnam” (or “Lion and Dragon: Four Centuries of The Netherlands and Vietnam) was launched at a seminar at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) - one of the oldest (founded in 1632) and most popular universities (now with more than 25.000 students) in the Netherlands.
Present at the seminar were over 100 representatives from the Dutch Foreign Ministry, Vietnamese Ambassador to the Netherlands Ha Huy Thong, Dutch Consulate General to Ho Chi Minh City Antonious van Zeeland as the co-author of the book, former Dutch Ambassadors to Vietnam, scholars from Dutch universities and institutes, overseas Vietnamese, Vietnamese students now living and studying in the Netherlands, and Vietnamese singer Dan Truong. With 7 chapters, 270 pages and co-authored by John Kleinen, Bert van der Zwan, Phan Huy Le, Nguyen Van Kim, Nguyen Quang Ngoc, Hoang Anh Tuan, Jody Leewes and Ton van Zeeland, the book traces the history of relations between the Netherlands and Vietnam back from early 17th Century, the Golden Age of the Netherlands, when the first Dutch ships arrived in Vietnam early 1600s. The authors presented the first batch and Dutch version of the book to representatives of the Dutch Foreign Ministry, former Dutch Ambassadors to Vietnam and Vietnamese Ambassador to the Netherlands Ha Huy Thong. The attendants at the seminar highly appreciated the book as a remarkable contribution by the group of Dutch and Vietnamese authors. It is believed that though there have been ups and downs, the relationship between the Netherlands and Vietnam, started centuries before diplomatic relation between the two countries was established in 1973, has developed on the right track. The book is considered important not only to better understand the Netherlands-Vietnam ties but also their respective international relations. The publication will be translated into Vietnamese and English and come out in 2008./. |
